Elf on a shelf Day 1: Arrival Day

So I have read about Elf on the Shelf before but haven’t done it with my daughter. She is 3 now and is really into Santa and the holidays so I decided to give it a go this year since she is older and more able to understand what we are doing. I was going to have his first day be tomorrow but once I started going with creating my elf schedule I just really wanted to get it started right away. So one day early isn’t too bad!

I researched Pinterest to find some ideas for Elf on the Shelf and came across a few ideas. I also came across various things for Advent as well. So I am trying to mix the 2 together and create my own version of Elf on the Shelf for my daughter. Each day the elf (who she named Elfie) will be causing some kind of mischief around the house. I then linked up an activity/gift to relate to each mischievous thing the elf does.

Instead of the normal naughty/nice I told her that her elf would go back to Santa each night and tell him about all the wonderful things she did that day. We talked about how it is nice when she shares with her brother (which we are having a lot of fun with right now) and what it means to be nice and friendly (which she generally is already).

Above is what she woke up to this morning. When she got up I told her that I had trouble sleeping because during the middle of the night someone was being really loud outside our house. I told her I heard jingle bells and thought that maybe we should check outside to see if there was anything out there from all that noise. This is what she saw when she opened the door. I think it’s fair to say she was extremely excited.  She’s a funny little girl, just to open the door she had to get her coat on because it was cold and to get the stuff off the front steps she had to go find her boots to put on as well.  At the front door was a wrapped box marked to Chloe that had a return address of Santa Claus The North Pole. There were also plates, “snow” covered donuts and hot chocolate for a delicious and not so healthy breakfast!

Side note: I seriously decided last night at like 10 that I wanted to start today instead of tomorrow and that is why nothing is cutely packaged. If I would have just waited one day I was going to go get Christmas cups and plates and have a cute set up for the donuts and chocolate. But with both kids in bed and my husband at work I couldn’t just leave and go get things so I had to make due with what I had.

When she unwrapped the box there was a little note to her from her new elf. Like I said I put it together really quick so that is why it is so short. If I had time I was going to print off a cute note explaining everything in a more kid friendly language but my printer is broken so I was unable to use the printer. So plan B!

After a long brainstorming session with my 3 year old she finally named her elf Elfie. I also have a 1 1/2 year old who I am not doing this with (he will probably help look for Elfie but that’s about it). He will participate in some of the activities but is too young to understand the concept, I will probably start doing the Elf on the Shelf with him next year.

This is where Elfie got to hang out today. My daughter really wanted to touch her at first so I had to make sure to put her up where she couldn’t reach.

I also DVR’d The Elf on the Shelf: An Elf’s story that was on the other night and we watched that tonight to help her get a better understanding. I really liked doing that because she realized what would happen to Elfie if she touched her.

Stay tuned to see the adventures of Elfie, our Elf on the Shelf!
